Ask an Expert: The Brazilian Bum Lift

One bit of surgery that I will probably never have to get is a bum enhancement, having been gifted with one of slightly out of hand proportions. That being said, the current trend for bountiful derrieres is quite the cultural shift and something that does fascinate me. I've read horror stories and seen people with quite magnificent results, but nobody ever really just talks about it. So who better to speak to than the daddy of it all - Dr Foued Hamza

Dr Hamza is a French surgeon who's done the most bottom lifts in the world and who pioneered the Brazilian Bottom Lift over a decade ago. The process involves fat being removed from other body parts and injected into the bum... and can cost up to £10,000. So - what's the deal? Turns out Tyler Durden would HATE it.

How does it actually work?

There has been an increasing interest in bottom lifts using fat transfer with the rise of the Brazilian Bottom lift. It’s a cosmetic surgical technique where fat is removed and then injected into the bottom to enhance the shape and size. The Brazilian lift specialises in a sculpting technique uses the patient's own fat to accentuate the curves that she may already have or would like to gain. No foreign objects (like silicone implants for boob jobs) are placed in the body, which is why it is increasingly gaining popularity.

We remove the amount of fat necessary (as in classic liposuction) to provide the patient with her desired shape and size - we usually use the extracted fat from the abdomen, thighs or hips. After liposuction, the fat suctioned from these areas is carefully processed and purified by decanting and centrifugation, and then transferred to the buttocks. If you're thinking of getting one, ensure the surgeon takes the whole body into account before reshaping the buttocks, as they should fully evaluate where and how this area can be enhanced in relation to the rest of your body.

Are the effects long-lasting?

This procedure lasts a lifetime and the shape of the buttocks naturally shifts with the growth of the rest of the person's body, ensuring that it is not obvious a surgery was even done in the first place.

How long does it last?

The procedure takes a few hours. Following the operation, there would be a quick recovery with no cuts and minimal scarring. Fat transfer surgery is performed either under general anaesthetic or under local anaesthetic with sedation, and is treated as a day case, so the patient will usually not have to stay overnight. The procedure usually takes one hour. Following the operation, there would be a quick recovery with no cuts and minimal scarring.

Is it dangerous?

While every surgery has its own risks, we've has been performing this specialised surgery for over 20 years and have pretty much perfected the craft. The surgery usually takes one hour, and as no foreign objects are placed in the body, it is the most natural and safest way to augment the buttocks.

Does it look natural or will I end up looking like a Kardashian?!

Ha! We do not perform this procedure simply to provide women with "bigger butts." Each client is consulted, and we take the whole body into account before reshaping the buttocks, giving it the most natural look possible.  Unlike classic liposuction, the procedure enables us to evaluate how this area can be enhanced in relation to the rest of the individual’s body by using his expert sculpting skill to remodel the necessary amount of fat from other parts of the body such as love handles to provide the desired shape and size.  Most women have a hard time ridding themselves of fat in certain areas such as the abdomen, hip and thighs where it is naturally deposited. Additional sculpting is then conducted around the butt to contour the area and improve the appearance of the lift. Many women take pride in the appearance of their bodies, and especially their bottoms.  As I don’t use any implants or silicone, which is typical of traditional cosmetic surgery, the bum looks and feels 100 percent natural after the procedure, and the patient doesn’t have to worry about any hard bits, or even worse, a fake looking bum.
